What to consider when choosing the most effective Heat Illness Prevention training

Heat illness prevention refers to the steps employers and employees take to reduce the risk of heat-related illness – such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke – in the workplace. It includes identifying environmental and personal risk factors, recognizing early symptoms, taking proactive measures like hydration and rest breaks, and knowing how to respond in emergencies.

Training equips employees and supervisors with the knowledge to recognize early signs of heat illness, take appropriate action and create safer work environments. It helps reduce the risk of injuries, lost productivity, workers’ compensation claims and liability, while supporting compliance with state and potentially federal regulations.

Any employee or supervisor working in high-heat environments, indoors or outdoors, should take this training. This includes industries like construction, manufacturing, transportation, warehousing, food service and more.

Yes. Several states have enacted laws that require heat illness prevention training:

    • California: California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 3395 and 3396
Requires annual training for all outdoor workplaces and most indoor workplaces where the indoor temperature reaches 82°F.
    • Nevada: Regulation R131-24AP
Applies to employers with more than 10 employees whose job classifications involve occupational exposure to heat illness. Training is required for any employee exposed for more than 30 minutes in any 60-minute period (excluding breaks). While the regulation does not mandate annual retraining, Nevada OSHA recommends refresher training as a best practice.
    • Oregon: OAR 437-002-0156 and OAR 437-004-1151
Requires annual training for employees performing work, whether indoor or outdoor, where the heat index equals or exceeds 80°F.

These regulations mandate training for employees and supervisors who work in high-heat conditions, both indoors and outdoors. While not all states have similar requirements yet, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is developing a proposed federal heat illness prevention standard. Traliant’s course is designed to meet the current training mandates in CA, NV, and OR, and help organizations proactively prepare for nationwide expectations.
