In a new article, Casey Heck, Chief People Officer at Traliant, explores why a lot of compliance training falls short in preparing employees for real-world scenarios. She examines how workplace risk rarely appears as clear-cut policy violations and instead emerges through ambiguous, everyday interactions where employees must rely on judgment, context and confidence to respond appropriately.
“Real situations don’t come with clear prompts or easy answers,” states Heck. “Employees have to interpret what’s happening and decide how to respond in the moment, often without confidence they’re getting it right. Training that focuses primarily on policy explanation doesn’t fully prepare them for those gray areas where judgment matters most.”
Heck also highlights how effective compliance training increasingly resembles storytelling, using connected, real-world scenarios that allow employees to practice navigating gray areas and making decisions in the moment. As workplace expectations continue to evolve, companies that invest in practical, behavior-focused training will be better positioned to strengthen workplace culture, reduce organizational risk and build employee trust.
