    New York's Retail Worker Safety Act (sometimes referred to as the New York State Workplace Violence Prevention Act) provides a strong framework for effective retail workplace violence prevention training. While specific requirements may vary by state (except California, which has its own regulations), key considerations include comprehensive coverage of relevant topics, interactive training methodologies, and alignment with best practices for de-escalation, emergency response, and overall workplace safety.

    The New York law mandates training that covers:
    • Self-protection methods.
    • De-escalation tactics.
    • Active shooter drills.
    • Emergency procedures.
    • Use of security alarms and panic buttons.
    • Supervisor responsibilities.
    • Site-specific emergency exits and meeting places.

    The deadline for implementing the policy and providing initial training in New York is June 2, 2025.
